Friedrich Merz winner of the German election has said Europe must seek to “achieve independence” from the United States after exit polls showed his conservative party were on track to win Sunday’s election in a vote that saw the far-right party gaining a surging support.
Merz, a long time conservative who has never held a government role will soon be the leader of Europe’s biggest economy after his center-right party Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party won 29% of electoral votes as shown by official results.
